Paracosma at Tokyo Game Conferences 2019

September was a great month for Game Developers and Gamers in Tokyo, with Paracosma Inc attending both the leading Game Developers Conference and the massive Tokyo Game Show.

The leading Japanese game developers conference, CEDEC 2019, was held in Yokohama from September 4-6. The Computer Entertainment Developers Conference (CEDEC) is an annual technical conference for the computer entertainment developers organized by the Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association (CESA), an Industry organization in Japan. Paracosma’s Takeyuki Ogura is one of the CEDEC’s organizers.

CEDEC features over 200 sessions by industry-leading developers and offers information for people connected to computer entertainment (mainly video games) development, business networking, and research and development of related technologies and hardware, etc. focused primarily on technical development topics.

This event was very intimate and the perfect place for the Paracosma to exchange information and network with industry-leading game developers and enthusiasts.

Just one week later, the Tokyo Game Show took place on September 12-15. With 262,076 visitors and a record 2,417 booths from 655 exhibitors, 350 from Japan and 305 from 39 other countries, the Tokyo Game Show 2019 was a massive event. Organized by the Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association the Tokyo Game Show focuses on Video Games across all platforms including consoles, PCs, smartphones and virtual reality systems, with 1522 game titles being shown. TGS2019 also featured live streaming of eSports events.

There were 108 VR titles registered to be shown at the 2019 show. Of the VR titles, 73.2% were for console or PC-tethered platforms, including PSVR, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. 8.3% were for Mobile VR, including Oculus Go/Gear VR and Daydream. While the VR Other category was at 18.5%, it is unknown if this included Oculus Quest. Comparing with TGS2018, there were some interesting platform shifts. PSVR jumped from 8.65% in 2018 to 24.05% in 2019 on a 111% increase in titles. Oculus Rift increased from 28.85% in 2018 to 34.18% in 2019. While, HTC Vive dropped from 52.88% in 2018 to 27.85% in 2019, on a 60% drop in titles. Windows Mixed Reality increased from 9.62% to 13.92% of the titles shown. This seems to mirror the broader shift in headset sales leadership from HTC to Oculus.
